Down in the most southern part of Languedoc/Roussillon, where France meets Spain, you will find the department of Pyrenees-Orientales known locally as French Catalonia. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Here you will find magnificent mountain ranges, miles of golden sandy beaches, luscious fruit, laden vines, vibrant bougainvillea, as well as pretty rustic red-roofed towns nestling beneath their individual churches. Ille-sur-Tet, the Roussillon`s peach capital, is one such red-roofed town and St. Etienne, its church, is one of the biggest in the region.
In this department of France you will experience the historic influence of Spain. French is the main language spoken but you will also hear the local people talk to each other in their native Catalan and throughout the summer Catalan festivals and dances are held in the town square.
The market town of Ille-sur-Tet is surrounded by acres of peach orchards and vineyards and has, as its backdrop, the magnificent Mount Canigou, which rises nearly 3000 metres into the sky. The scenery all around the town is breathtaking and within half an hour you can either be in the foothills of the Pyrenees or be enjoying the beach at Canet Plage.
Our apartments are served well by public transport. You can fly to Perpignan Airport from London Stansted, Charleroi (Ryanair), Southampton (Flybe) and Paris (Air France). There is a shuttle bus service from the airport to the bus and train station. Ille-sur-Têt is on the main bus and train routes up the Têt Valley.
Another way to get here by plane is to fly from Bristol or Luton to Beziers Airport. Beziers is about one and a quarter hours from here. There are good car hire facilities there and also a shuttle bus to the station with links to Perpignan. Altenatively, you can fly to Gerona Airport in Spain, about one hour and twenty minutes away. Many flights from all over the UK and Europe fly into Gerona (Ryanair) every day. There are good car hire facilities at Gerona Airport and also a bus service which links Gerona Airport with Perpignan and runs back and forth five times a day, it`s called the Frog Bus. Fares, at a very reasonable price, may be purchased on the internet prior to travel.
Other ways to get here are by car and also by train. Eurostar to Paris or Lille and then the TGV through France to Perpignan. Planning ahead and booking early secures the best prices.
