Ille-sur-Tet is
situated just off the N 116, twenty minutes drive west of the city of
Perpignan. It is on the main bus and train routes from coast to mountains.
It is a fine example
of a French/Catalan medieval walled town. It is situated away from the
main tourist resorts and offers visitors the chance to witness and experience
the local way of life down in the deep South of France, close to the Spanish
border. It is self contained and provides a good range of shops and cafés,
including access to the internet at "L`Informatique". It holds
its own market twice weekly. The size of the church, St Etienne, demonstrates
the town`s historical significance.
The town skyline
rises up above the River Tet, one of the three rivers in the region which
wind their way down from the Pyrenees mountains to the Mediterranean coast.
The river provides the area with a beautiful vista as well supplying the
earth with the irrigation needed to produce luscious fruit and laden vines.
The famous sandstone
rock formation, "Les Orgues" and the majestic Mount Canigou
give Ille-sur-Tet its magical setting right on the edge of the Roussillon
plain, France`s last region before North East Spain.
